NOC Engineer

Location: Atlanta, GA

Position Summary:

NOC Engineer is responsible for providing system maintenance, repair, configuration, installation and administrative functions for all Cypress Communications data devices supporting internal and external customers in a 7/24/365 environment. Assist with training, mentoring and improving skill-set of all NOC Engineers. Support Customer Care, direct customers, and internal employees for high level problem clearing for Internet, VoIP, email/domain services, and VPN offerings. Clear problems and/or escalate within specified time requested by Customer for the acceptance of services including non-standard business hours and weekends.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure and maintain and repair all data network equipment including Cisco routers and switches, Lucent/Copper Mountain/Viadux DSLAMS
  • Resolve issues with Vendors, i.e. Troubleshoot T1& DS3 level Circuits
  • Familiar with Layer 1 test patterns such as QRSS, All 1’s, and All 0’s
  • Escalate as necessary in trouble resolution.
  • Provide network design and implementation assistance in support of network expansion/improvement.
  • Solve customer escalations
  • Train other NOC engineers on more advanced products and services.
  • Review procedures/SOPs and policy documents for accuracy and implementation for functions within the NOC
  • Using strong trouble-shooting skills, advanced diagnostic tools and experience work service, MAC, and installation tickets/work orders escalated from the customer care center in a timly and efficient manner.
  • Contact customers in support of ticket clearing and/or resolving.
  • Work with field technicians in the clearing of troubles and/or network outages.
  • Work with field and/or engineering in testing and accepting new ciruits to be connected to Cypress Network.
  • Attend formal and/or cross training as requested by Manager, Tier II NOC
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by Manager, Tier II NOC
  • 1st Level in escalation chain.
  • Responsible and accountable for the stability of Cypress Communications platforms and network components.

Working Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have at least 3+ years in data communications or networking.
  • Cisco IOS and devices such as 17xx, 18xx, 19xx, 26xx, 28xx, 36xx, 72xx, and 76xx series switches/routers
  • Juniper JUNOS and M10 routers.
  • TCP/IP, PPP, MLPPP, HDLC, ISDN, BRI, PRI, Frame Relay, OSPF, BGP, VLAN, NAT, SIP, RTP, H.323, G.711, G.728, G.729A, IPSEC, L2TP, PPTP
  • DSLAM devices such as CopperMountain, Viadux, Lucent TNT, Cisco LRE
  • DNS, DHCP, Email, Web, POP3, SMTP and HTTP
  • Ping, Telnet, Trace Route, SSH
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of OSI model and IP Addressing.
  • Prefer previous Telecom and ISP experience.
  • CCNA/CCND certification or equivalent perfered.
  • Must have a technical degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Proficiency in Outlook mail system is a must.
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of Windows and Linux OS’s

Other:

  • 7/24/365 environment. Availability for shift work and overtime is required
  • Works as part of a team providing a high level support using interpersonal skills interfacing with external (revenue producing) and internal customer (Cypress employees).
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact with all levels of employees in a professional manner.
  • As an essential function of this position, the employee must be able to handle high levels of stress satisfactorily and be congenial with other employees and customers at all times.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of attention to detail.

Systems:

  • Familiar with NetCool, OpenNMS, Viola, IRIS

Performance Metrics

  • Perform all assigned tasks in timely fashion while being available to support other team members.
  • Provide support for all Internet devices within Cypress Communications network.
  • Maintain high degree of availability as measured by Network Monitoring System.
  • Develop a working knowledge of all data products offered by Cypress Communications and requested by Manager.
